A condensed version of Paul's Resume can be downloaded HERE

I. BACKGROUND:

Paul began photographing after receiving his law degree in 1981. He has studied photography at Ryerson Polytechnic University with Henry Gordillo and Peter Lindsay and has photographed throughout Canada, U.S., the Caribbean and Europe. He is a member of the Scarborough Arts Council and the Rail's End Gallery in Haliburton, Ontario.

II. ARTISTIC STATEMENT:

His photographs attempt to reveal what most of us overlook in everyday life: the texture of forgotten doorways, abandoned objects, derelict buildings, weather worn signs; the interplay of light and shade on graffiti murals, street scenes and back alleys. They depict urban and other images in a quasi-documentary style.

A sort of timelessness is present in his photographs as well as a romanticism reminiscent of 1950's beat poetry, the kind of feeling captured in a photograph of an empty table at an outdoor cafe or a discarded cigarette in an ashtray.

While his photographs can be deceptively simple and are largely devoid of people, they are distinctly humanistic and are inspired by a quiet space that is not necessarily serene.

His art is conceived in silence, is intuitive and spontaneous. Photography is a means for him to explore the unseen but universal in the familiar, pursue personal growth and self knowledge and create exceptional images.

He believes that photography is “The poetry of the moment, illuminated by the beauty of light”.
